The wait is over for the Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC) party list as the Commission on Elections proclaimed today its second nominee, Atty. Cinchona Gonzales, four months after the May elections.

Gonzalez’ proclamation was stalled when Atty. Luis Lokin lodged a complaint with the COMELEC contesting Gonzales’ nomination. CIBAC, headed by Rep. Joel Villanueva, argued that the Comelec should throw out the complaint since the party has the right to nominate and even replace its representatives.

Earlier, the Comelec proclaimed Villanueva who was a member of the previous congress. The Comelec ruled that CIBAC is entitled to two seats.

Gonzales felt a sigh of relief after she was sworn into office around 5:30 p.m. before Associate Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo of the Sandiganbayan. As a neophyte lawmaker in the 14th congress, Atty. Gonzales said she is now ready to buckle down to work.

Atty. Gonzales is a former member of the Board of Trustees and Corporate Secretary of the Philippine for Jesus Movement (PJM). From 1992 to 1997, she served as a resource person in the free legal counseling on the air program over DZRJ. In 2003, Atty. Gonzales attended the Harvard Law School’s program of instruction for lawyers. She also served as Counsel of the Republic of the Philippines in the Office of the Solicitor General for twelve years.

On Monday, the new lady legislator will attend the plenary session as the 239th member of the House of Representatives.
