TWO party-list representatives yesterday warned that global warming is raising sea levels around the world and some 43 million residents along the country’s coastlines face losing their homes to unparalleled flooding. Citizens Battle Against Corruption Reps. Joel Villanueva and Cinchona Cruz-Gonzales filed House Resolution No. 840 urging the House committees on energy, ecology, natural resources and science and technology to conduct a joint inquiry into climate change and global warming. Villanueva and Cruz-Gonzales described the scenario in the countryside as “ominous” and said proper solutions must be implemented to mitigate the impact of global warming. Citing a report from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, they said that a rise in sea levels could make half of Navotas City permanently under water and wipe out low-lying islands of the archipelago.
Villanueva and Cruz-Gonzales asked the joint committee “to determine the environmental and economic policies that would most effectively and efficiently enable the government to address the drastic atmospheric and environmental changes challenging the world today.” Source: People’s Journal by Ryan Ponce Pacpacvo, November 17, 2008 |
