Villanueva said any amount of relief that could be provided to the people in the aftermath of natural calamities should be given immediately.

“Since the refund belongs to the consumers of Meralco, it should be given right now because of their poor conditions,” he said.

THE Manila Electric Company should refund with reasonable dispatch their customers a total of P278 million in net over-recoveries or 1.07 centavos for every resident consuming 100 per kilowatt-hour and P2.14 for those consuming 200 kwh.

Anakpawis Rep.  Joel Maglunsod and Citizens Battle Against Corruption Rep.  Joel Villanueva underscored the need to provide the people, especially the victims of typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” the timely help they need.

Maglunsod urged Meralco to implement the refund immediately instead of implementing it within a year as ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission.

“Positive developments iyan at dapat ang refund immediate para makatulong din sa ating mga consumers,” he said.

Maglunsod also asked the ERC to implement royalties on indigenous sources of energy so that more benefits will be given to the people.

“I challenge the ERC to implement the royalties on indigenous sources of energy so that the government can provide more benefits to the public who are reeling from the effects of destructive typhoons,” said Maglunsod.

The ERC said the effect on consumers would be minimal. It added that the  resolution covered the three pending cases of Meralco pertaining to over- and under-recoveries in its transmission charges and the implementation of its approved charges to recover certain under-recoveries in its purchased power adjustment.
