In a related development, Citizens Battle Against Corruption Rep. Joel Villanueva asked the DTI to show political will in arresting big traders who are behind overcharging of basic commodities in various parts of the country.

"The DTI should not just issue warning against these unscrupulous traders but present big fish in public so that the problem of overpriced goods will be addressed with dispatch," said Villanueva as he also scored the funeral parlors overcharging their clients.

LAWMAKERS yesterday expressed outrage over some funeral parlors that reportedly overcharged families of fatalities of the massive flooding that hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces due to Typhoon Ondoy last Saturday.

Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said authorities must immediately run after abusive owners of funeral parlors and deal them with the full force of the law for adding miseries to the families of Ondoy’s victims.

"The act of overcharging the families of Ondoy’s fatalities is unforgivable. These crooked and ruthless owners of funeral parlors must be brought to justice for adding despair and depression to the families who are grieving the passing of their loved ones," said Romualdez.

Romualdez lauded President Arroyo for ordering the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to warn some funeral parlors that reportedly charge double to the fatalities of Ondoy.

It will be recalled that the massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces has caused the lives of an estimated 300,000 persons and damaged many properties, including houses and vehicles.
